Wopsy Avenue Water Main Replacement Project

In June of 2021, the Altoona Water Authority began the second phase of a three-phase project involving a water main transmission line that supplies our High Service area, known as, Fairview, Juniata, and Grandview. The work, including the ground restoration, was completed at the end of the week of November 15, 2021.

In summary, the Authority replaced 1200-feet of 4-inch Cast Iron pipe with 8-inch Ductile Iron on Ivy Side Drive from East Wopsononock to East Park Avenue. The crew installed four fire hydrants, twenty-five service lines and fourteen new 8-inch lines valves. This portion of the project was completed in mid-August of 2021.  On East Wopsononock Avenue from Juniata Gap Road to Broadway, the crew replaced 1700-feet of 16-inch Cast Iron pipe with Ductile Iron pipe.  A total of nine service lines have been replaced throughout this project.

This project will reduce customer interruption due to leaks and improve the water quality and fire protection capabilities in the area.

The final phase of this project will span from 11th Street to 3rd Street.  That work is expected to be completed within the next 5 years.
